Description
The terrace at 1-28 Windsor Street, Dundee, was built around 1851-1872. It is a long row of houses, with a neo-classical style at the southern end and Renaissance details at the northern end, the latter designed by James MacLaren, sloping down towards the river. The terrace comprises 28 houses, arranged in groups and stepped downwards.
The first eight houses (Nos. 1-8) have a severe neo-classical style dating from 1851-1872. They are arranged in four pairs of three-bay houses, with each pair featuring two architraved and corniced doorways in the centre. The first-floor windows have aprons. A main cornice runs along the top, topped by a balustrade and an M-shaped slate roof, with chimneys rising from the ridge. Numbers 2 and 3 are slightly recessed.
Numbers 9-18 are five Renaissance-style pairs of three-bay houses, with basements from Number 11 onwards. These houses feature two central doorways surmounted by consoled pediments, and windows set within lugged architraves. The first-floor windows are segmentally arched, with keystones above the doorways. A main cornice and balustrade are present; the balustrade is missing from Numbers 9, 10, 17 and 18. The roofs are platformed slate roofs with four round-headed dormers, each containing a casement window, except for Numbers 17 and 18.
Numbers 19 and 20 are single, stepped four-bay houses, built in a style similar to Numbers 9-18. Number 19 has a pedimented doorpiece in the third bay, which has been moved to the fourth bay at Number 20, both with cornices. Number 19 has three round-headed dormers. The balustrades are missing from both houses. Number 21 is a five-bay house in a similar style, featuring a central pedimented doorpiece, a balustrade, and dormers.
Numbers 22 and 23 are similarly styled, single-stepped three-bay houses with pedimented doorpieces on the left-hand side, balustrades, and two dormers each. Numbers 24, 25 and 26 are single-stepped three-bay houses, featuring consoled cornices to the left-hand doorways, roll-moulded windows, and segmentally arched first-floor windows. Dormers are missing from Number 24 (updated in 2020), and from Number 25; Number 26 has two dormers.
Numbers 27 and 28 are paired three-bay houses with paired, centrally located consoled pedimented doors. The windows have margins and are segmentally arched at the first floor, with label stops. A cornice is present, but the balustrade is missing. Number 28 has two round-headed dormers.
Most windows are two-pane sash and case, though some original 12-pane windows remain at Numbers 1 and 8. The original dormer windows were T-shape casements. All properties have slate roofs and ridge stacks.
