Description

The building at 6 Windsor Street, Dundee, comprises a long terrace of houses constructed circa 1851–1872. The terrace exhibits a mix of neo-classical and Renaissance detailing, with the northern section of the terrace, designed by James MacLaren, incorporating Renaissance features and stepping down towards the river. The terrace is comprised of 21 individual houses, numbered 1 to 28 inclusive.

The houses at numbers 1 to 8 are of a severe neo-classical style, with four pairs of three-bay houses, each pair featuring two architraved and corniced doorways at the centre. Aprons are present beneath the first-floor windows. The general architectural features include a main cornice, a balustrade, and an M-shaped slate roof with ridge stacks. Numbers 2 and 3 are slightly recessed.

From numbers 9 to 18, the terrace presents five stepped pairs of three-bay houses with basements introduced from number 11 onwards. These houses have two central doorways adorned with consoled pediments, and windows set within lugged architraves, with segmentally arched heads above the doors, keystoned over the doorways. A main cornice and balustrade are present, though the balustrade is missing from numbers 9, 10, 17 and 18. The roofs are platformed slate with four round-headed dormers, each containing a casement window, except for numbers 17 and 18.

Numbers 19 and 20 are single, stepped four-bay houses, designed in a style similar to numbers 9 to 18. Number 19 features a pedimented doorpiece in the third bay, which was moved to the fourth bay in number 20, and both have corniced details. Number 19 has three round-headed dormers. The balustrades are missing from both.

Number 21 is a five-bay house, also in a similar style, with a central, pedimented doorpiece, a balustrade, and dormers. Numbers 22 and 23 are single, stepped three-bay houses, incorporating pedimented doorpieces on the left side, balustrades, and two dormers each.

Numbers 24, 25, and 26 are single, stepped three-bay houses. Number 24 has its dormers missing (updated 2020), while number 25 is missing its balustrade and dormers. Number 26 has two dormers. Numbers 27 and 28 are a paired set of three-bay houses with paired, centrally located, consoled pedimented doors. The ground-floor windows have label stops. Number 28 has two round-headed dormers and is missing its balustrade.

The majority of the windows are two-pane sash and case, although some original twelve-pane windows remain at numbers 1 and 8. The original dormer windows are T-shaped casements. The roofs are slate, and the chimneys run along the ridge.
