Description

This is a long terrace of houses built around 1851-1872. The southern section is neo-classical in style, while the northern section features Renaissance details, with some design work by James MacLaren. The terrace steps down towards the river.

The first eight houses (Nos. 1-8) are a severe neo-classical design. They are two-storeys in height and feature four pairs of three-bay houses, with each pair having two centre doorways framed by architraves and cornices. The first-floor windows have aprons. The terrace has a main cornice, a balustrade, and an M-shaped slate roof with ridge stacks. Numbers 2 and 3 are slightly recessed.

Numbers 9-18 are five pairs of three-bay Renaissance houses, stepped down towards the river, with basements from number 11 onwards. These are two-storeys high. They have two centre doorways with consoled pediments, and windows set within lugged architraves, with segmentally arched heads at first floor level, and keystones above the doors. A main cornice and balustrade are present (although the balustrade is missing from numbers 9, 10, 17, and 18). The roofs are platformed slate with four round-headed dormers, each with a casement window, except at numbers 17 and 18.

Numbers 19 and 20 are single, stepped four-bay houses, similarly styled to numbers 9-18. Number 19 has a pedimented doorpiece in the third bay, which has been moved to the fourth bay at number 20, along with a corniced detail. Number 19 has three round-headed dormers. Balustrades are missing from both.

Number 21 is a five-bay house of similar style, featuring a central pedimented doorpiece, a balustrade, and dormers. Numbers 22 and 23 are single, stepped three-bay houses, styled similarly to the rest of the terrace, with pedimented doorpieces on the left side, balustrades, and two dormers each.

Numbers 24, 25, and 26 are single, stepped three-bay houses. Number 24 has consoled cornices to the doors on the left side, roll-moulded windows, and segmentally arched windows at first floor level; dormers were updated in 2020. Numbers 25 has its balustrade missing. Number 26 has two dormers.

Numbers 27 and 28 are paired three-bay houses with paired, central consoled, pedimented doors. The windows have margins and segmentally arched heads at first floor level, with label stops. The cornice is present, the balustrade is missing, and number 28 has two round-headed dormers.

Most windows are two-pane sash and case, although some original 12-pane windows remain at numbers 1 and 8, and original T-shape casement dormer windows are also present. Buildings have slate roofs and ridge stacks. The statutory address is 1-28 (inclusive) Windsor Street.
