Description
The building at 8 Windsor Street, Dundee, is a long terrace of houses built around 1851-1872. It exhibits a neo-classical style at its southern end, transitioning to Renaissance details towards the north, with the latter section designed by James MacLaren. The terrace steps down towards the river.
Numbers 1 through 8 represent the neo-classical section, constructed between 1851 and 1872. These are severe, three-bay houses arranged in pairs, with each pair featuring two central doorways with architraves and cornices. The first-floor windows have aprons. A main cornice runs along the top of the facade, complemented by a balustrade and an M-shaped slate roof with ridge stacks. Numbers 2 and 3 are slightly recessed.
Numbers 9 through 18 are a series of five stepped pairs of three-bay Renaissance houses, with basements appearing from number 11 onwards. Each pair has two central doorways topped with consoled pediments, and the windows are set within lugged architraves, segmentally arched at the first floor, and keystoned over the doors. A main cornice and balustrade are present, though the balustrade is missing from numbers 9, 10, 17 and 18. These houses have platformed slate roofs with four round-headed dormers, containing casement windows, with the exception of numbers 17 and 18.
Numbers 19 and 20 are single, stepped, four-bay houses, styled similarly to numbers 9-18. Number 19 has a pedimented doorpiece in the third bay, which was moved to the fourth bay in number 20, with a corniced top. Number 19 features three round-headed dormers. The balustrades are missing from both houses.
Number 21 is a five-bay house echoing the style of numbers 9-18. It features a central, pedimented doorpiece, a balustrade, and dormers.
Numbers 22 and 23 are similarly styled, single, stepped, three-bay houses with pedimented doorpieces on the left side, balustrades, and two dormers each.
Numbers 24, 25, and 26 are single, stepped, three-bay houses. Number 24’s dormers were updated in 2020. Number 25 lacks a balustrade and dormers. Number 26 has two dormers. The houses feature consoled cornices above the left doorways, roll-moulded windows, and segmentally arched windows at the first-floor level.
Numbers 27 and 28 are paired three-bay houses with paired, central, consoled pedimented doorways. The windows have margins, are segmentally arched at the first floor, and feature label stops. The cornice is present, but the balustrade is missing. Number 28 has two round-headed dormers.
Most windows are two-pane sash and case, though some original 12-pane windows remain at numbers 1 and 8, and the original dormer windows are T-shape casements. The roofs are slate, and the building is topped with ridge stacks. The statutory address includes numbers 1 through 28 inclusive, covering the entire terrace.
