Description

The terrace at 1-28 Windsor Street, Dundee, dates from around 1851 to 1872. It is a long row of buildings displaying a mix of neo-classical and Renaissance architectural styles, with the north section featuring detailing by James MacLaren, and stepped down towards the river. The first eight numbers (1-8) are a severe neo-classical design from 1851 to 1872, comprising four pairs of three-bay houses. Each pair has two centrally positioned doorways with architraves and cornices. The first floor windows have aprons. A main cornice, balustrade, and an M-shaped slate roof with ridge stacks are present. Numbers 2 and 3 are slightly recessed.

Numbers 9 to 18 are five stepped pairs of three-bay Renaissance houses, with basements added from number 11 onwards. They feature two central doorways topped with consoled pediments, and windows set within lugged architraves, with segmental arches on the first floor and keystones above the doors. A main cornice and balustrade are visible, although the balustrade is missing from numbers 9, 10, 17, and 18. Platformed slate roofs have four round-headed dormers, each with casement windows, except for numbers 17 and 18.

Numbers 19 and 20 are single, stepped, four-bay houses, built in a similar Renaissance style to numbers 9 to 18. Number 19 has a pedimented doorpiece in the third bay, which was moved to the fourth bay of number 20. Number 19 also has three round-headed dormers. The balustrade is missing from both buildings. Number 21 is a five-bay house in a similar style, with a central, pedimented doorpiece, a balustrade, and dormers. Numbers 22 and 23 are similarly styled single, stepped, three-bay houses, with pedimented doorpieces on the left side, balustrades, and two dormers each.

Numbers 24, 25, and 26 are single, stepped, three-bay houses. Number 24 has consoled cornices over the doors on the left side, with roll-moulded windows and segmental arches on the first floor. The dormers have been updated on number 24 (as of 2020). Number 25 is missing its balustrade and dormers. Number 26 retains its balustrade and two dormers. Numbers 27 and 28 are paired three-bay houses with paired, centrally placed, consoled, pedimented doors. The windows have margins and segmental arches on the first floor, along with label stops. The cornices are present, but the balustrade is missing. Number 28 has two round-headed dormers.

Most windows are two-pane sash and case, with some original twelve-pane windows at numbers 1 and 8 and original T-shape casement dormer windows. All buildings have slate roofs and ridge stacks. The statutory address covers numbers 1 to 28 inclusive.
