Description

This is a long terrace of houses built around 1851 to 1872, located at 1-28 Windsor Street, Dundee. The architectural style changes along its length, transitioning from neo-classical at the southern end to Renaissance details at the northern end, with the latter work attributed to James MacLaren, and the building stepping down towards the river.

The southern section (numbers 1-8) is a severe neo-classical design. It comprises four pairs of three-bay houses; each pair has two central doorways framed with architraves and cornices. Aprons feature below the first-floor windows. The terrace is constructed in ashlar, some of which is painted. Numbers 2 and 3 are slightly recessed.

Numbers 9 to 18 are five Renaissance-style pairs of three-bay houses, stepped along the street, with basements added from number 11 onwards. Each pair has two central doorways topped with consoled pediments. The windows are set within lugged architraves, with a segmental arch above the first-floor windows, and keystones above the doorways. Numbers 19 and 20 comprise single, stepped four-bay houses, designed in a style similar to numbers 9-18, featuring a pedimented doorpiece (moved to the fourth bay at number 19) and cornices. Number 21 is a five-bay house in the same style, with a central, pedimented doorpiece, a balustrade, and dormers. Numbers 22 and 23 are similarly styled single, stepped three-bay houses with left-hand pedimented doorpieces and balustrades; each has two dormers.

Numbers 24, 25, and 26 are single, stepped three-bay houses with consoled cornices over the left-hand doors. The windows have roll-moulded surrounds and segmental arches on the first floor. Balustrades and dormers are missing from number 24 (as of 2020), and from number 25, but are present at number 26. Numbers 27 and 28 are paired three-bay houses with paired central doors, each topped with a consoled pediment. The windows are set within margins with segmental arches on the first floor, featuring label stops.

The majority of the windows are two-pane sash and case, although some original 12-pane windows remain at numbers 1 and 8. Dormer windows are largely T-shaped casements. Generally, the roofs are slate, with ridge stacks, and many have lost their balustrades.
