Description
The terrace at 1-28 Windsor Street, Dundee, dates from around 1851 to 1872 and presents a distinctive architectural blend. The southern section (numbers 1-8) is executed in a severe neo-classical style, while the northern portion (numbers 9-28) incorporates Renaissance detailing, with much of this work attributable to James MacLaren, and steps down towards the river.
Numbers 1 to 8 consist of four pairs of three-bay houses. Each pair features two central architraved and corniced doorways. The first-floor windows have aprons. A main cornice, balustrade, and M-shaped slate roof are characteristic, along with ridge stacks. Numbers 2 and 3 are slightly recessed.
From number 9 onwards, the style transitions to Renaissance, with five stepped pairs of three-bay houses. Basements are present from number 11. The doorways are distinguished by consoled pediments, and the windows are set within lugged architraves, with segmentally arched heads at the first floor and keystones over the doors. A main cornice and balustrade are present, although the balustrade is missing from numbers 9, 10, 17, and 18. Platformed slate roofs are topped with four round-headed dormers, each containing a casement window, except at numbers 17 and 18.
Numbers 19 and 20 are single, stepped, four-bay houses in a similar style to numbers 9-18. Number 19 has a pedimented doorpiece in the third bay, which has been moved to the fourth bay at number 20, both featuring cornices. Three round-headed dormers are present at number 19. The balustrade is missing from both.
Number 21 is a five-bay house in a similar style, featuring a central pedimented doorpiece, a balustrade, and dormers. Numbers 22 and 23 are similarly styled, single-stepped, three-bay houses, each with a pedimented doorpiece on the left side and two dormers.
Numbers 24, 25, and 26 are single-stepped, three-bay houses with consoled cornices to the left-hand doors and roll-moulded windows, with segmental arches at the first floor. Dormers were missing from number 24 (as of 2020), while the balustrade and dormers are missing from number 25. Number 26 retains two dormers.
Numbers 27 and 28 consist of paired three-bay houses with paired, central, consoled, pedimented doorways. The windows have margins and segmental arches at the first floor, with label stops. The cornice is present, but the balustrade is missing, and number 28 has two round-headed dormers.
Most windows are two-pane sash and case, although some original twelve-pane windows remain at numbers 1 and 8, as well as original T-shape casement dormer windows. The roofs are slate and feature ridge stacks.
