Description

The terrace at 1-28 Windsor Street, Dundee, was built around 1851-1872. It presents a neo-classical style at its southern end, transitioning to Renaissance details towards the north, with the latter designed by James MacLaren. The terrace steps down towards the river.

The first eight numbers (1-8) are severe neo-classical in style. These are two-storey houses in groups of four, each pair featuring two prominent, architraved and corniced doorways at the centre. The first-floor windows have aprons. A main cornice runs along the length, and the roof is slate with a balustrade and ridge stacks. Nos 2 and 3 are slightly recessed.

Numbers 9-18 are a series of five stepped pairs of three-bay Renaissance-style houses, with basements from number 11 onwards. Each pair features two centre doorways topped with consoled pediments, while the windows have windows set in lugged architraves. The first-floor windows are segmentally arched, and keystoned over the doors. A main cornice and balustrade are present (though the balustrade is missing from numbers 9, 10, 17, and 18). The roofs are platformed slate with four round-headed dormers, which have casement windows, except for numbers 17 and 18.

Numbers 19 and 20 are single, stepped, four-bay houses continuing the style of 9-18. Number 19's pedimented doorpiece has been moved to the fourth bay, and exhibits cornicing. Number 19 has three round-headed dormers. The balustrades are missing from both properties. Number 21 is a five-bay house in a similar style, with a central, pedimented doorpiece, balustrade, and dormers.

Numbers 22 and 23 are single, stepped, three-bay houses with pedimented doorpieces on the left side, balustrades, and two dormers each. Numbers 24, 25, and 26 are single, stepped, three-bay houses; number 24 has updated dormers (as of 2020), while the balustrade and dormers are missing from number 25. Number 26 retains two dormers.

Numbers 27 and 28 are paired three-bay houses with paired central, consoled pedimented doors. The windows have margins and are segmentally arched at the first floor, with label stops. The cornice is present, but the balustrade is missing, and number 28 has two round-headed dormers.

Most windows are two-pane sash and case design, although some original 12-pane windows are found at numbers 1 and 8, and there are original T-shape casement dormer windows. The roofs are slate and feature ridge stacks.
