Description

The terrace at 1-28 Windsor Street, Dundee, was constructed around 1851-1872. It is a long terrace demonstrating neo-classical detailing at its southern end and Renaissance detailing towards the north, with the latter elements designed by James MacLaren, as the terrace steps down towards the river. The terrace comprises two storeys, with the northern properties featuring basements and attics. The buildings are faced in ashlar, with some painted sections.

The first eight numbers (1-8) are characterised by severe neo-classical architecture constructed between 1851 and 1872. These consist of four pairs of three-bay houses, where each pair features two centrally positioned architraved and corniced doorways. The first-floor windows have aprons. A main cornice, balustrade, and an M-shaped slate roof with ridge stacks are defining features. Numbers 2 and 3 are slightly recessed.

Numbers 9-18 are five pairs of stepped three-bay Renaissance style houses, with basements introduced from number 11 onwards. These demonstrate two central doorways adorned with consoled pediments, and windows set within lugged architraves, with segmentally arched heads over the doors, keystones above, and windows with roll-moulding. A main cornice and balustrade are present, though the balustrade is missing from numbers 9, 10, 17, and 18. The slate roofs are platformed and feature four round-headed dormers, each containing casement windows, except for numbers 17 and 18.

Numbers 19 and 20 are single, stepped, four-bay houses, designed in a similar style to numbers 9-18. Number 19 features a pedimented doorpiece originally in the third bay, which was moved to the fourth bay, and a corniced detail. Number 19 also has three round-headed dormers. The balustrade is missing from both numbers 19 and 20.

Number 21 is a five-bay house in a similar style, featuring a central pedimented doorpiece, missing balustrade, and dormers. Numbers 22 and 23 are similarly styled, single, stepped, three-bay houses with pedimented doorpieces on the left, missing balustrades, and two dormers each.

Numbers 24, 25, and 26 are single, stepped, three-bay houses. Number 24 has consoled cornices to the left-hand doors; number 25 has roll-moulded windows, and segmentally arched first-floor windows. The dormers are missing from number 24 (updated 2020), with a missing balustrade and dormers, and number 25, but are present at number 26.

Numbers 27 and 28 are paired three-bay houses, with paired central, consoled, pedimented doors. The windows have margins and segmentally arched heads, with label stops. The cornice is present, the balustrade is missing, and two round-headed dormers are found on number 28.

Most windows are two-pane sash and case, with some original twelve-pane windows at numbers 1 and 8, and original T-shape casement dormer windows. The building is topped with slate roofs and ridge stacks.
