Description

The building at 22 Windsor Street, Dundee, is a long terrace of houses dating from approximately 1851 to 1872. It exhibits a neo-classical style at its southern end, transitioning to Renaissance details towards the north, with the latter elements designed by James MacLaren, and the terrace stepping down towards the river. The terrace comprises 28 houses, numbered 1 to 28 inclusive.

Houses 1 to 8 are severe neo-classical in style, built between 1851 and 1872. They are arranged in pairs of three-bay houses, with each pair featuring two centrally positioned architraved and corniced doorways. The first-floor windows have aprons. A main cornice, balustrade, and M-shaped slate roof, along with ridge stacks, complete the exterior. Numbers 2 and 3 are slightly recessed.

Houses 9 to 18 are five stepped pairs of three-bay Renaissance-style houses, with basements appearing from number 11 onwards. They feature two central doorways adorned with consoled pediments, and windows set within lugged architraves, segmentally arched at the first floor, and keystoned above the doors. A main cornice and balustrade are present; the balustrade is missing from numbers 9, 10, 17, and 18. Platformed slate roofs have four round-headed dormers, each with casement windows, except for numbers 17 and 18.

Numbers 19 and 20 are single, stepped, four-bay houses, styled similarly to numbers 9 to 18. Number 19 features a pedimented doorpiece in the third bay, moved to the fourth bay at number 20, which also features a corniced doorway. Number 19 has three round-headed dormers. Balustrades are absent from both houses.

Number 21 is a five-bay house in a similar style, with a central pedimented doorpiece, balustrade, and dormers. Numbers 22 and 23 are similarly styled, single-stepped, three-bay houses, with pedimented doorpieces on the left side, balustrades, and two dormers each.

Houses 24, 25, and 26 are single-stepped, three-bay houses. Number 24 has consoled cornices to the left-hand doors, roll-moulded windows, and a segmentally arched first floor. The dormers are missing (updated in 2020). Number 25 lacks a balustrade and dormers, while number 26 retains two dormers.

Numbers 27 and 28 are paired, three-bay houses with paired, centrally positioned, consoled pedimented doors. The windows have margins and are segmentally arched at the first floor, with label stops. A cornice is present, and the balustrade is missing. Number 28 has two round-headed dormers.

The windows are predominantly two-pane sash and case; however, some original 12-pane windows remain at numbers 1 and 8, along with original T-shape casement dormer windows. Slate roofs and ridge stacks complete the construction.
