Description
The terrace at 1-28 Windsor Street, Dundee, dates from around 1851 to 1872, and displays a mixture of neo-classical and Renaissance architectural styles. The southern section (numbers 1-8) is of a severe neo-classical design, while the northern portion (numbers 9-28) incorporates Renaissance details, designed by James MacLaren, and steps down towards the river.
The terrace consists of two storeys, with numbers 9-28 also having basements and attics. The buildings are constructed of ashlar, some of which has been painted. Numbers 1 to 8 are four pairs of three-bay houses, each pair featuring two architraved and corniced doorways in the centre. The ground floor windows have aprons and the buildings are topped by a main cornice, a balustrade, and an M-shaped slate roof, with ridge stacks. Numbers 2 and 3 are slightly recessed.
Numbers 9 to 18 are five pairs of stepped three-bay houses, with basements from number 11 onwards. Their design features two centre doorways with consoled pediments, windows set within lugged architraves, and segmentally arched doorways with keystones. These houses also feature a main cornice and balustrade, though the balustrade is missing from numbers 9, 10, 17, and 18. They have platformed slate roofs with four round-headed dormers, each with casement windows, except for numbers 17 and 18. Numbers 19 and 20 are single, stepped four-bay houses, styled similarly to numbers 9-18, with a pedimented doorpiece in the third bay (moved to the fourth bay at number 19). Number 19 also has three round-headed dormers and a missing balustrade. Number 21 is a five-bay house sharing similar detailing with a central pedimented doorpiece, a balustrade, and dormers. Numbers 22 and 23 are similarly styled single stepped three-bay houses with pedimented doorpieces on the left, and balustrades and two dormers each. Numbers 24, 25, and 26 are single stepped three-bay houses with consoled cornices to the left-hand doors, roll-moulded windows, and segmental arches at the first-floor level. Dormers are missing from number 24 (as of 2020), and the balustrade is missing from number 25, while number 26 retains two dormers. Numbers 27 and 28 are a pair of three-bay houses with paired, central consoled pedimented doors. They have windows set in margins with segmental arches at the top and label stops. The balustrade is missing, and number 28 has two round-headed dormers.
Most windows are two-pane sash and case, though some retain original 12-pane sashes (at numbers 1 and 8) and original T-shape casement dormer windows. The buildings have slate roofs and ridge stacks.
