Description

The terrace at 20 Windsor Street, Dundee, dates to approximately 1851-1872. It is a long row of buildings exhibiting a mix of neo-classical and Renaissance architectural styles, with the latter detailing largely the work of James MacLaren, and with the elevation stepping downwards towards the river. The terrace comprises 28 houses, numbered 1 to 28 inclusive.

The first eight houses (Nos. 1-8) present a severe neo-classical style from 1851-1872. They are arranged in four pairs of three-bay houses, with each pair featuring two centrally placed, architraved and corniced doorways. Aprons are present below the first-floor windows. The terrace is built of ashlar, some of which is painted, and features a main cornice, balustrade, and an M-shaped slate roof with ridge stacks. Nos. 2 and 3 are slightly recessed.

Houses 9 to 18 are arranged in five stepped pairs of three-bay houses, with basements introduced from No. 11 onwards. These houses display Renaissance detailing, with two centre doorways adorned with consoled pediments. Windows are set within lugged architraves, segmentally arched at the first floor, and keystoned above the doors. A main cornice and balustrade are present, although the balustrade is missing from Nos. 9, 10, 17 and 18. The roofs are platformed slate roofs with four round-headed dormers, featuring casement windows, except for Nos. 17 and 18.

Nos. 19 and 20 are single, stepped, four-bay houses, similarly styled to Nos. 9-18. No. 19 features a pedimented doorpiece originally in the third bay, which was moved to the fourth and corniced. No. 19 also has three round-headed dormers. Balustrades are missing from both. No. 21 is a five-bay house with a style consistent with the rest of the terrace, including a central, pedimented doorpiece, a balustrade, and dormers.

Nos. 22 and 23 are single, stepped, three-bay houses with pedimented doorpieces on the left-hand side, and missing balustrades. Each has two dormers. Nos. 24, 25 and 26 are single, stepped, three-bay houses; No. 24 has roll-moulded windows and segmental arches on the first floor, and dormers were removed and updated in 2020; No. 25 has a missing balustrade; and No. 26 has two dormers.

Nos. 27 and 28 are paired, three-bay houses with paired, centrally placed, consoled pedimented doors. Their windows are set within margins, with segmental arches on the first floor and label stops. The cornice is present, but the balustrade is missing, and No. 28 has two round-headed dormers.

The windows are predominantly two-pane sash and case, with some original 12-pane windows at Nos. 1 and 8, and original T-shape casement dormer windows. The roofs are slate, and the buildings feature ridge stacks.
