Description

The terrace at 1-28 Windsor Street, Dundee, was built around 1851-1872. It is a long row of buildings exhibiting a transition in style, with a neo-classical design at the southern end and Renaissance detailing at the north, the latter elements added by James MacLaren. The terrace steps down towards the river.

Numbers 1-8 are severe neo-classical in style, dating from 1851-1872. These are four pairs of three-bay houses, each pair featuring two architraved and corniced doorways at the centre. The first-floor windows have aprons. A main cornice, balustrade, and an M-shaped slate roof with ridge stacks are characteristic features. Numbers 2 and 3 are slightly recessed.

Numbers 9-18 comprise five stepped pairs of three-bay Renaissance-style houses, with basements from number 11 onwards. These houses have two central doorways with consoled pediments, and windows set in lugged architraves. The first-floor windows are segmentally arched and keystoned over the doorways. A main cornice and balustrade are present, although the balustrade is missing from numbers 9, 10, 17, and 18. These houses have platformed slate roofs with four round-headed dormers, each featuring a casement window, except numbers 17 and 18.

Numbers 19 and 20 are single, stepped four-bay houses, designed in a similar style to numbers 9-18. Number 19 features a pedimented doorpiece in the third bay, which has been shifted to the fourth bay at number 20, with a corniced detail. Number 19 has three round-headed dormers. The balustrades are missing from both houses.

Number 21 is a five-bay house with a central, pedimented doorpiece, a balustrade, and dormers, consistent with the style of numbers 9-18. Numbers 22 and 23 are similarly styled, single-stepped three-bay houses, with pedimented doorpieces on the left side, balustrades, and two dormers each.

Numbers 24, 25, and 26 are single-stepped three-bay houses; number 24 has had dormers updated in 2020. Numbers 24 and 25 have lost their dormers and balustrade, while number 26 retains two dormers. The doorways at number 24 have consoled cornices, and the windows are roll-moulded with segmental arches at the first floor.

Numbers 27 and 28 form a pair of three-bay houses, centrally featuring paired consoled pedimented doors. The windows have margins and segmental arches at the first floor, with label stops. The cornice is present, but the balustrade is missing. Number 28 has two round-headed dormers.

Most windows are two-pane sash and case, although some original 12-pane windows remain at numbers 1 and 8, along with original T-shape casement dormer windows. The roofs are slate, with ridge stacks.
