Description

The terrace at 1-28 Windsor Street, Dundee, dates from circa 1851-1872 and exhibits a neo-classical style at its southern end, transitioning to Renaissance detailing towards the north, with the latter elements designed by James MacLaren. The terrace steps down towards the river. It comprises two storeys, with some houses having basements and attics. The buildings are constructed of ashlar, with some areas painted.

Numbers 1-8 are severe neo-classical in style, built between 1851 and 1872. These consist of four pairs of three-bay houses, with each pair featuring two central doorways accentuated by architraves and cornices. Aprons are present below the first-floor windows. A main cornice runs along the top, accompanied by a balustrade, and an M-shaped slate roof with ridge stacks. Numbers 2 and 3 are slightly recessed.

Numbers 9-18 consist of five stepped pairs of three-bay houses, featuring basements from number 11 onwards. They display Renaissance detailing, with two central doorways each topped with consoled pediments. Windows are set within lugged architraves and segmentally arched at the first floor, with keystones over the doors. A main cornice and balustrade are present, though the balustrade is missing from numbers 9, 10, 17, and 18. Platformed slate roofs are topped with four round-headed dormers, each containing casement windows, except for numbers 17 and 18.

Numbers 19 and 20 are single, stepped, four-bay houses, similarly styled to numbers 9-18. Number 19 incorporates a pedimented doorpiece in the third bay, which has been moved to the fourth bay at number 20. Number 19 also features three round-headed dormers. Balustrades are missing from both.

Number 21 is a five-bay house with a central, pedimented doorpiece, a balustrade, and dormers, all consistent with the style of numbers 9-18. Numbers 22 and 23 are single-stepped, three-bay houses with pedimented doorpieces on the left side, balustrades, and two dormers each.

Numbers 24, 25, and 26 are single-stepped, three-bay houses. Number 24 has consoled cornices above the left-hand doors, and roll-moulded windows, segmentally arched at the first floor. Dormers were removed from Number 24 (updated 2020). Numbers 25 has a missing balustrade, while number 26 has two dormers present.

Numbers 27 and 28 are paired, three-bay houses, with paired central, consoled, pedimented doors. The windows have margins and are segmentally arched at the first floor, with label stops. The buildings are missing a cornice and balustrade, and number 28 has two round-headed dormers.

Most windows are two-pane sash and case, with some original 12-pane windows at numbers 1 and 8, and original T-shape casement dormer windows. The roofs are slate and feature ridge stacks.
