Description
The terrace at 7 Windsor Street, Dundee, dates to circa 1851-1872. It is a long, neo-classical and Renaissance style terrace, designed to step down towards the river. The terrace comprises numbers 1 to 28 inclusive. Nos 1-8 are severe neo-classical in style and date from 1851-1872, consisting of four pairs of three-bay houses, with each pair featuring two centre architraved and corniced doorways. First-floor windows have aprons. A main cornice, balustrade, and M-shaped slate roof with ridge stacks are characteristic features. Nos 2 and 3 are slightly recessed.
Numbers 9-18 are five stepped pairs of three-bay Renaissance style houses, with basements from No 11 onwards. These houses have two centre doorways with consoled pediments. Windows are set within lugged architraves, segmentally arched at the first floor, and keystoned over the doors. A main cornice and balustrade are present on these sections, although the balustrade is missing from Nos 9, 10, 17 and 18. The slate roofs are platformed and feature four round-headed dormers with casement windows, except for Nos 17 and 18.
Numbers 19 and 20 are single, stepped four-bay houses, similarly styled to Nos 9-18. No 19 has a pedimented doorpiece in the third bay, which has been moved to the fourth bay at No 20, along with a corniced doorway. Three round-headed dormers are present at No 19. Balustrades are missing from both these houses.
No 21 is a five-bay house of similar style, featuring a central pedimented doorpiece, a balustrade, and dormers. Numbers 22 and 23 are similarly styled, single, stepped three-bay houses with pedimented doorpieces to the left, balustrades, and two dormers each.
Numbers 24, 25 and 26 are single, stepped three-bay houses. No 24 has consoled cornices to the left-hand doors, and roll-moulded windows that are segmentally arched at the first floor. The dormers were updated in 2020 and are now missing. Balustrade and dormers are missing on No 25, while No 26 retains two dormers.
Numbers 27 and 28 are paired three-bay houses with paired central consoled pedimented doors. Windows have margins and are segmentally arched at the first floor, with label stops. The cornice is present, but the balustrade is missing. No 28 has two round-headed dormers.
Most windows are two-pane sash and case, although some original 12-pane windows remain at Nos 1 and 8, as do original T-shape casement dormer windows. The roofs are slate, with ridge stacks.
