Description
The terrace at 1-28 Windsor Street, Dundee, dates from circa 1851 to 1872. It is a long terrace presenting a neo-classical style at its southern end, transitioning to Renaissance detailing at the northern end, with the latter designed by James MacLaren. The terrace steps down towards the river.
The first eight numbers (1-8) are severe neo-classical in style, constructed in ashlar (some now painted). These are arranged as four pairs of three-bay houses, each pair featuring two centrally placed, architraved and corniced doorways. Aprons are present below the first-floor windows. A main cornice runs along the top, accompanied by a balustrade and an M-shaped slate roof, with ridge stacks. Numbers 2 and 3 are slightly recessed.
Numbers 9 to 18 comprise five stepped pairs of three-bay houses, with basements from number 11 onwards. These also have ashlar construction. The two centre doorways are topped with consoled pediments, while windows are set within lugged architraves, with segmental arches over the doors, keystones above the doors, and windows on the first floor. A main cornice and balustrade are present (the balustrade is missing from numbers 9, 10, 17, and 18). The roofs are platformed slate roofs with four round-headed dormers containing casement windows, except for numbers 17 and 18.
Numbers 19 and 20 are single, stepped four-bay houses, similarly styled to numbers 9-18. Number 19 features a pedimented doorpiece in the third bay, which has been moved to the fourth bay at number 20, where it is corniced. Number 19 also has three round-headed dormers. Balustrades are missing from both.
Number 21 is a five-bay house in a similar style, featuring a central, pedimented doorpiece, balustrade, and dormers. Numbers 22 and 23 are single, stepped three-bay houses with pedimented doorpieces on the left side, balustrades, and two dormers each.
Numbers 24, 25, and 26 are single, stepped three-bay houses. Number 24 has consoled cornices over the left-hand doorways, roll-moulded windows, and segmental arches on the first floor. Dormers are missing from number 24 (updated 2020), while number 25 lacks a balustrade and dormers. Number 26 has two dormers.
Numbers 27 and 28 are paired three-bay houses with paired, centrally placed, consoled, pedimented doors. Windows have margins and segmental arches on the first floor, with label stops. The cornice is present, but the balustrade is missing, and number 28 has two round-headed dormers.
Most windows are two-pane sash and case, although some original 12-pane windows remain at numbers 1 and 8, along with original T-shape casement dormer windows. All have slate roofs and ridge stacks.
