Description

The terrace at 2 Windsor Street, Dundee, dates from circa 1851 to 1872. It is a long building presenting neo-classical detailing at its southern end and Renaissance details at its northern end, with the latter work by James MacLaren, and the building steps down towards the river. The terrace comprises 28 houses, numbered 1 to 28, built in groups. The southern section, numbers 1 to 8, is of severe neo-classical style: four pairs of three-bay houses, with each pair having two centre doorways framed by architraves and cornices. Aprons are present beneath the first-floor windows. Above is a main cornice, a balustrade, and an M-shaped slate roof with ridge stacks. Numbers 2 and 3 are slightly recessed.

Numbers 9 to 18 are five stepped pairs of three-bay Renaissance houses, with basements from number 11 onwards. They feature two centre doorways topped with consoled pediments, and windows set within lugged architraves; the first-floor windows are segmentally arched and keystoned over the doors. This section has a main cornice and a balustrade (missing from numbers 9, 10, 17 and 18). The slate roofs are platformed and feature four round-headed dormers with casement windows, except for numbers 17 and 18. Numbers 19 and 20 are single, stepped, four-bay houses, styled similarly to numbers 9 to 18, with a pedimented doorpiece in the third bay (moved to the fourth bay at number 19) and cornicing. Number 19 has three round-headed dormers; the balustrade is missing from both numbers 19 and 20. Number 21 is a five-bay house, also in a similar style, with a central, pedimented doorpiece, balustrade and dormers. Numbers 22 and 23 are single, stepped, three-bay houses, styled similarly, with pedimented doorpieces on the left, and balustrades and two dormers each. Numbers 24, 25 and 26 are single, stepped, three-bay houses with consoled cornices to the left-hand doors, roll-moulded windows, and segmentally arched first-floor windows. The dormers are missing from number 24 (as of 2020), and are missing from the balustrade and dormers of number 25, with two dormers present on number 26. Numbers 27 and 28 are paired, three-bay houses with paired, centrally placed, consoled, pedimented doors. The windows are set in margins and are segmentally arched at first, with label stops. This section lacks a balustrade, and number 28 has two round-headed dormers.

Most windows are two-pane, sash and case, although some original 12-pane windows remain at numbers 1 and 8, as do original T-shaped casement dormer windows. The roofs are slate, with ridge stacks.
