Description

The terrace at 4 Windsor Street, Dundee, dates from around 1851 to 1872. It is a long row of buildings, designed in a neo-classical style at the southern end, transitioning to Renaissance details at the northern end, with the latter elements by James MacLaren. The terrace steps down towards the river.

The first eight numbers (1-8) are severe neo-classical in style and date from 1851-1857. They comprise four pairs of three-bay houses, with each pair featuring two centrally positioned, architraved and corniced doorways. Aprons are present below the first-floor windows. The elevation is finished with a main cornice, a balustrade, and an M-shaped slate roof, topped with ridge stacks. Numbers 2 and 3 are slightly recessed.

Numbers 9 to 18 form five stepped pairs of three-bay houses, with basements from number 11 onwards. These houses have two central doorways topped with consoled pediments. Windows are set within lugged architraves, and the first-floor windows are segmentally arched and keystoned over the doorways. A main cornice and balustrade are present, although the balustrade is missing from numbers 9, 10, 17 and 18. The roofs are platformed slate roofs with four round-headed dormers, each containing a casement window, except for numbers 17 and 18.

Numbers 19 and 20 are single stepped four-bay houses mirroring the style of numbers 9-18. Number 19 features a pedimented doorpiece in the third bay, which has been moved to the fourth bay at number 20, with a corniced finish. Number 19 has three round-headed dormers. Balustrades are missing from both.

Number 21 is a five-bay house in a similar style with a central, pedimented doorpiece, balustrade and dormers. Numbers 22 and 23 are similarly styled, single stepped three-bay houses with pedimented doorpieces on the left side, balustrades, and two dormers each.

Numbers 24, 25 and 26 are single stepped three-bay houses. Number 24 has consoled cornices to the left doorway, roll-moulded windows, and segmentally arched first-floor windows. The dormers have been replaced, and the balustrade is missing. Number 25 lacks a balustrade and dormers. Number 26 has two dormers.

Numbers 27 and 28 are paired three-bay houses with paired, centrally positioned, consoled pedimented doors. The windows have label stops and are segmentally arched on the first floor. The cornice and balustrade are missing, and number 28 features two round-headed dormers.

The windows are generally two-pane sash and case, although some original 12-pane windows remain at numbers 1 and 8, along with original T-shaped casement dormer windows. The roofs are slate with ridge stacks. The statutory address covers numbers 1-28 inclusive.
