Description
The building at 3 Windsor Street, Dundee, is a long terrace of houses constructed around 1851-1872. It presents a neo-classical style at its southern end, transitioning to Renaissance details at the north, with work by James MacLaren. The terrace steps down towards the river. Nos. 1-8 are severe neo-classical houses, arranged in pairs of three bays, each pair featuring two centrally positioned, architraved and corniced doorways. Aprons are present beneath the first-floor windows. A main cornice, balustrade, and M-shaped slate roof with ridge stacks are characteristic features. Nos. 2 and 3 are slightly recessed.
Nos. 9-18 comprise five stepped pairs of three-bay Renaissance houses, with basements from No. 11 onwards. These houses feature two central doorways with consoled pediments, and windows contained within lugged architraves, segmentally arched at the first floor and keystoned above the doorways. A main cornice and balustrade are present, though the balustrade is missing from Nos. 9, 10, 17 and 18. They have platformed slate roofs and four round-headed dormers with casement windows, except Nos. 17 and 18. No. 19 and 20 are single, stepped four-bay houses in a similar style to Nos. 9-18. No. 19 has a pedimented doorpiece in the third bay, which has been moved to the fourth bay for No. 20 and features a corniced detail. Dormers are present on No. 19 (three round-headed) and are missing from No. 20. The balustrade is also missing from No. 20.
No. 21 is a five-bay house, again in a similar style, with a central pedimented doorpiece, balustrade, and dormers. Nos. 22 and 23 are similarly styled, single stepped three-bay houses, featuring a pedimented doorpiece on the left side, missing balustrades, and two dormers each.
Nos. 24, 25, and 26 are single, stepped, three-bay houses. No. 24 has consoled cornices to the left-hand doors, roll-moulded windows, and a segmentally arched first floor, with dormers removed in 2020. The balustrade is missing from No. 25. No. 26 retains both a balustrade and two dormers.
Nos. 27 and 28 are paired three-bay houses with paired, centrally placed consoled pedimented doors. Windows have margins and segmentally arched first floors, with label stops. The cornice is present, the balustrade is missing, and No. 28 has two round-headed dormers.
Most windows are two-pane sash and case, with some original 12-pane windows at Nos. 1 and 8, and original T-shaped casement dormer windows. The roofs are slate, with ridge stacks. The statutory address covers numbers 1-28 inclusive.
