Description

The terrace at 1-28 Windsor Street, Dundee, dates from circa 1851-1872. The design is neo-classical at the southern end, transitioning to Renaissance details towards the north, with the latter work by James MacLaren, and the building stepping down towards the river. The terrace comprises two storeys, with basements and attics added to the northern properties. It is constructed of ashlar, with some areas painted.

Numbers 1-8 are severe neo-classical in style and date from 1851-1872. These consist of four pairs of three-bay houses, each pair featuring two centre doorways with architraves and cornices. Aprons are present below the first-floor windows. The terrace features a main cornice, a balustrade, and an M-shaped slate roof with ridge stacks, while numbers 2 and 3 are slightly recessed.

Numbers 9-18 are five stepped pairs of three-bay Renaissance-style houses, with basements from number 11 onwards. These houses feature two centre doorways with consoled pediments and windows within lugged architraves, with segmentally arched first-floor windows and keystones over the doors. A main cornice and balustrade are present, although the balustrade is missing from numbers 9, 10, 17, and 18; the roofs are platformed slate with four round-headed dormers containing casement windows, except for numbers 17 and 18.

Numbers 19 and 20 are single, stepped four-bay houses, styled similarly to numbers 9-18, with a pedimented doorpiece in the third bay (moved to the fourth bay at number 19) and cornicing. Number 19 has three round-headed dormers. Balustrades are missing from both houses. Number 21 is a five-bay house in a similar style with a central, pedimented doorpiece, balustrade, and dormers.

Numbers 22 and 23 are similarly styled, single-stepped three-bay houses with pedimented doorpieces on the left and missing balustrades. Each has two dormers. Numbers 24-26 are single-stepped three-bay houses, with consoled cornices to the doors on the left and roll-moulded windows with segmental arches above the first floor. Dormers were removed from number 24 (updated in 2020), with a missing balustrade and dormers from number 25, and two dormers to number 26.

Numbers 27 and 28 are paired three-bay houses with paired, central consoled pedimented doors. The windows have margins and are segmentally arched at the first floor, with label stops. The cornice is present, but the balustrade is missing. Number 28 has two round-headed dormers.

Most windows are two-pane sash and case, although some original 12-pane windows are retained at numbers 1 and 8, along with original T-shape casement dormer windows. All roofs are slate with ridge stacks.
