Description

The terrace at 1-28 Windsor Street, Dundee, dates from circa 1851 to 1872. It is a long, neo-classical and Renaissance-detailed terrace, stepped downwards towards the river, with later Renaissance detailing by James MacLaren to the northern section. The terrace consists of two-storey houses, with those to the north having basements and attics. The buildings are constructed of ashlar, with some painted surfaces.

Numbers 1 to 8 are severe neo-classical in style, dating from 1851 to 1872. These are arranged as four pairs of three-bay houses, with each pair featuring two architraved and corniced doorways in the centre. The first-floor windows have aprons. A main cornice runs along the top, accompanied by a balustrade and an M-shaped slate roof, with ridge stacks. Numbers 2 and 3 are slightly recessed.

Numbers 9 to 18 are five stepped pairs of three-bay Renaissance houses, with basements from number 11 onwards. These houses have two central doorways topped with consoled pediments, and windows set in lugged architraves, with segmentally arched heads above the doors, and keystones over the doors. A main cornice and balustrade are present, though the balustrade is missing from numbers 9, 10, 17, and 18. Platformed slate roofs are topped with four round-headed dormers, with casement windows except at numbers 17 and 18.

Numbers 19 and 20 are single, stepped, four-bay houses, similarly styled to numbers 9 to 18. Number 19’s pedimented doorpiece, originally in the third bay, was moved to the fourth bay, and features a cornice. Number 19 also has three round-headed dormers. Balustrades are missing from both houses.

Number 21 is a five-bay house in a similar style, featuring a central, pedimented doorpiece, a balustrade, and dormers. Numbers 22 and 23 are similarly styled, single-stepped, three-bay houses with pedimented doorpieces on the left, balustrades, and two dormers each.

Numbers 24, 25, and 26 are single-stepped, three-bay houses. Number 24 has updated dormers (as of 2020). Number 25’s balustrade and dormers are missing, while number 26 retains two dormers.

Numbers 27 and 28 form a pair of three-bay houses with paired central, consoled, pedimented doors. The windows have margins, and segmental arches at the first floor, with label stops. The cornice and balustrade are missing, and number 28 has two round-headed dormers.

Most windows are two-pane sash and case, although some original 12-pane windows remain at numbers 1 and 8, as do original T-shaped casement dormer windows. The roofs are slate and feature ridge stacks.
