Description
The terrace at 1-28 Windsor Street, Dundee, dates from circa 1851 to 1872. It is a long terrace displaying neo-classical architecture at its southern end and Renaissance detailing to the north, with the latter designed by James MacLaren, and stepping down towards the river. The terrace comprises two storeys, with the northern properties having basements and attics. The building is constructed of ashlar, with some areas painted.
Nos. 1-8 exhibit a severe neo-classical style from 1851-7, arranged as four pairs of three-bay houses. Each pair features two centre doorways with architraves and cornices. The first-floor windows have aprons. A main cornice, balustrade, and M-shaped slate roof with ridge stacks are characteristic features. Nos. 2 and 3 are slightly recessed.
Nos. 9-18 are five pairs of stepped three-bay Renaissance houses, with basements from No. 11 onwards. They feature two centre doorways topped with consoled pediments, and windows set within lugged architraves, with segmentally arched heads above the doorways and keystones. A main cornice and balustrade are present (though missing from Nos. 9, 10, 17, and 18). The roofs are platformed slate with four round-headed dormers, each containing a casement window, except for Nos. 17 and 18.
Nos. 19 and 20 are single, stepped, four-bay houses, similarly styled to Nos. 9-18. No. 19 has a pedimented doorpiece in the third bay, which was moved to the fourth bay in No. 20, along with a corniced treatment. No. 19 also features three round-headed dormers, while the balustrades are missing from both properties.
No. 21 is a five-bay house, sharing a similar style, with a central, pedimented doorpiece, a balustrade, and dormers. Nos. 22 and 23 are single, stepped, three-bay houses, with pedimented doorpieces on the left, balustrades, and two dormers each.
Nos. 24, 25 and 26 are single, stepped, three-bay houses. No. 24 has consoled cornices to the left doorways, roll-moulded windows with segmental arches on the first floor. The dormers were updated in 2020. No. 25 lacks a balustrade and dormers; No. 26 has two dormers.
Nos. 27 and 28 are paired, three-bay houses with paired, central, consoled pedimented doorways. The windows have margins and segmental arches at first floor, with label stops. They have a cornice and a missing balustrade, with two round-headed dormers on No. 28.
Most of the windows are two-pane sash and case, though some original 12-pane windows remain at Nos. 1 and 8, as do original T-shaped casement dormer windows. The roofing is slate, with ridge stacks.
