Description

Sunningdale, located at 1 Ralston Road in West Ferry, Dundee, is a 2-storey, 3-bay Art Deco villa designed by Donald Ross of Thoms and Wilkie, dated 1933. The building features smooth rendered brick construction and a flat roof. It has a base course and includes plate-glass and top-hinged windows, although some have been replaced with uPVC frames that are out of character. The windows have terracotta cills and louvred shutters, and the parapet is adorned with a vertically fluted frieze and crimped coping. The moulded stacks have identical cans.

On the east elevation, there is a partially glazed entrance door on the left, framed by a moulded ashlar doorcase and a flat-roofed canopy. Small windows and low plinths flank the entrance, with a small window centered above on the first floor and a slender stair window to the right. A projecting canted bay at the far right features a chimneybreast in the center, with a full-height canted window on the left and a similar window on the right forming an angle with the north elevation.

The south elevation has a recessed bay at the center with modern sliding doors on the ground floor, and a tripartite window on the first floor that opens onto a canted deck-balcony dated 1933, complete with a flag pole and flat-roofed canopy. Each outer bay has symmetrically placed windows on both the ground and first floors.

The north elevation features an off-set entrance door on the left with a wide plain doorcase, along with windows on both the ground and first floors. There is a recessed bay at the far right with symmetrically placed windows.

On the west elevation, a chimneybreast is located at the center, flanked by windows on both the ground and first floors.

The property is enclosed by coped harled walls, with a garage situated on falling ground to the east and a similar wall to the east that includes two gatepiers and railings.
