Description
Belsize House, located at 1 Belsize Road in West Ferry, Dundee, dates from around 1910, with an eastern addition made around 1950 and a further large addition by Thoms and Wilkie in 1973. This irregular-plan Arts and Crafts villa features a single storey, two storeys, and an attic, with a harled exterior and a slate roof. The building has some transomed and mullioned windows with leaded panes on the south and west sides, along with other multi-pane timber casements and flat-roofed dormers. It is characterized by deep sweeping eaves with plain bargeboards and ashlar-coped and moulded stacks topped with terracotta cans.
On the northeast elevation, there is an integral entrance porch that is off-centre and flanked by windows, with a blank bay to the right. Above the porch, two dormers are set in the swept roof. To the left, there is a projecting stair gable with a window, and a wide recessed bay at the far left that includes a door, a back-stair window, and various other windows, dormers, and rooflights. Later additions in a sympathetic style are present at the outer left.
The west gable features a two-storey canted window on the right with a piended roof, a large window on the ground floor to the left, and a smaller window on the first floor.
The south elevation has an off-centre advanced gable with a window at both the ground and first floors set in a recessed round-headed panel. There are additional windows at the ground and first floors on the right return and the left return. A bay on the right includes a window at the first floor and two dormers. Modern additions are located at the far and outer right, while a further advanced single-storey gable at the left re-entrant, added in 1986, features a large segmental window and a window on the left return. The far left includes two round-headed windows, three windows at the first floor, and a dormer.
Inside, the villa has a wide-boarded outer hall with a cove ceiling, and a panelled inner hall with a half-timbered ceiling leading to a scale and platt staircase adorned with barley-sugar balusters. The dining room features fielded panelling, an ashlar chimneypiece, and a metal hood.
Additionally, there is a wrought-iron Arts and Crafts-type lamp standard and two rendered and lined gatepiers with bulbous ashlar caps, with 'Belsize' inscribed on the south gatepier.
