Description

This is a large, two-storey and attic, Arts and Crafts-style villa built in 1911 to the designs of MascLaren, Sons and Soutar (Charles G Soutar). The building is broadly U-shaped. The north and south elevations are constructed of rubble stone, while the east and west elevations are harled, with a red tile roof. Timber casement windows are fitted throughout, and there are oversailing stacks.

The north elevation is asymmetrical. A round-headed arch with a two-leaf door leads to an integral loggia and entrance door. A jerkin-headed gable is on the left, and a skew gable with a piended roof and swept dormer appears on the right. Further to the left is a round-headed arch leading to a kitchen court. A gable is located at the far left, featuring paired and single windows at ground level, three bipartites on the first floor, a tablehead stack, windows on the return elevation, and two dormers. A brick and pantile lean-to is located at the outer left.

The east elevation is also asymmetrical. An off-centre gabled bay contains a tall stack, paired windows at ground and first floor levels, and a bracketted bipartite window at attic level. A recessed bay to the left has modern flat-roofed additions which mask the ground floor and contain paired windows on the first floor, along with a piended roof dormer. A bay at the far right features a window at ground and first floor levels, a swept and piended roof dormer, and a single-storey piended roof projection. A two-storey canted window with a basement is located at the far left, and an oversailing gablehead at the attic contains a bracketted window, alongside a similar smaller window on the return.

The south elevation is five-bay, symmetrical, and incorporates a three-bay verandah at ground floor level, centrally positioned, with timber Doric columns (later glazed) and a piended red tile roof. A canted window is located on the first floor, with adjoining windows, and single windows are on the left and right. A canted window is present in the gabled bay, beneath an oversailing, weather-boarded gablehead, with a weathervane and weathercock at the ridge. Windows are present on the ground and first floors at the far left and right, accompanied by two piended-roof dormers.

The west elevation is asymmetrical. A gabled bay on the right has a two-storey canted window and an oversailing gablehead at the attic with a bracketted window, along with a similar window on the return. A recessed bay on the left has a modern addition at ground floor level, and a plain timber verandah at first floor, with two windows and a five-light box dormer. An advanced gable is located at the far left, masked at ground floor level, with a large window on the first floor and a blank oval panel at the attic. A recessed gable at the outer left has a left skew swept to ground floor entrance loggia, a window on the first floor, and is slightly oversailing.

The interior features concealed chimneypieces and some alterations to room partitioning. A good central well stair is present, incorporating barley sugar balusters and a bull's-eye ceiling light. An inglenook with Arts and Crafts timberwork is located at the attic floor.

The garden walls are constructed of coped rubble stone at the north and west sides, adjoining the north elevation, with a ball finial at the angle. A rubble wall is located at the south side, with rounded coping and a round-headed arched overthrow (a decorative archway) to the pedestrian entrance.
