Description

240 Hilltown, also known as Dundee Savings Bank, is a two-storey bank building constructed in 1904 by David W Baxter of Johnston and Baxter. It features a red ashlar free Baronial style and is located on a corner site.

The building has a circular corner tourelle that contains the entrance vestibule, which is highlighted by a projecting pedimental doorpiece with a triple transom light above it. On the ground floor, there are two corniced and transomed single-light windows, while the first floor has three similar windows. The building is topped with a corbelled cornice and a conical roof that includes a wrought-iron finial.

Flanking gables are present on both frontages, each featuring a five-light double transomed window on the ground floor and a three-light transomed window on the first floor. These windows are adorned with a keystone and a small semi-circular armorial pediment, set within a semi-elliptically arched recess. The building also has diapered stacks.

On Stirling Street, there are three additional bays that exhibit similar window designs, with three-light windows on the ground floor and cross windows on the first floor. The building is finished with a carved parapet, slate roofs, and diapered gable end stacks.

Inside, while some modernisation has occurred, several good contemporary wooden doorpieces remain intact.
