Description

234-238 Hilltown in Dundee is a four-storey tenement building dated 1885, designed in a simple Scots Baronial style and situated on a corner site featuring a turret that projects out at the second floor. The building is constructed of coursed rubble with ashlar details.

The elevation facing Hilltown has three bays, with the right bay stepped up to follow the slope. The ground floor shop front has been altered, although the cornice remains intact. The upper floors feature a central bipartite window and single windows on either side, all with roll-moulded arrises and segmental arches at the second floor. Continuous hood-moulds are present, stepped at the first floor and segmental arched at the second. The eaves cornice, crow-stepped gable, and party wall include rubble ridge stacks and slate roofs. The angled corner bay has a slightly recessed shop entrance on the ground floor, with three-light windows above and corbelled oriel bows at the second and third floors. The turret is conical with a slate roof, featuring a corbel table below the cornice and a wrought-iron finial.

The elevation facing Stirling Street consists of six bays, styled similarly to the Hilltown side, but all windows are single-light. The ground floor includes two stair doors with flanking windows, while the first and second floors have openings that step up to the right, maintaining a continuous level at the third floor. Crow-stepped wallhead stacks are located over the second and fourth bays, with single hood moulds enclosing date and thistle features at the third-floor windows below the stacks. The building has ridge stacks and slate roofs, while the rear is plain.

The windows are sash and case with four-pane glazing, except for the two-pane windows at the corner and twelve-pane windows at the rear.
