Description

Trinity Church Hall, located at 146 Princes Street in Dundee, was designed by David Baxter in 1914 and originally served as the Eastern Branch of the Dundee Savings Bank. This single-storey, five by five-bay Baroque bank building is situated on a prominent corner site and features a notable clock tower.

The building is constructed of ashlar stone on a rock-faced base. Its street front is identical on both sides, showcasing a rock-faced base and a band course. The central three bays are recessed and flanked by giant engaged Ionic columns. The windows are framed in Gibbs surrounds, complete with keystones and open segmental pediments, and there are oculi above them. An inscription reading "Dundee Savings Bank" is displayed in the entablature. The slightly advanced end bays feature channelled pilasters and small pedimented windows, also in Gibbs surrounds.

A dentil cornice runs along the top, with a balustraded center and short parapets adorned with wreath and scroll decorations over the end bays. To the west, there is a lower one-storey addition on the Victoria Street elevation, which has one bay with a keystone and a pedimented window that interrupts the cornice. The building has a blocking course and a slate roof.

The entrance is located in the angled corner tower, featuring an arched doorway within a portico supported by paired Ionic columns. The portico has a carved tympanum in the pediment and urns positioned over the dies. The square-section tower displays the arms of Dundee above the door and has oculi on its other faces. It is topped with a dentil cornice, a dome with a finial, and projecting clock faces set in arched hoods, with urn finials on the dies at the angles.
