Description

The Bank of Scotland, located at 17-19 High Street in Dumbarton, was designed by architects J Dick Peddie and George Washington Browne and built in 1897. This three-storey, five-bay bank is constructed of pink sandstone ashlar. The elevation facing High Street is symmetrical above the ground floor, featuring two-storey canted oriels that rise above the eaves in the outer bays.

The central and right bays each have a basket-arched door with moulded reveals, with the central bay adorned with foliate decoration and blind arcading, while the right bay features an ogival hood-mould. A large lintelled opening occupies the intermediate bay, with panelled Corinthian pilasters flanking the central and right bays. The windows are mullioned and transomed, with depressed-arched lights set within rectangular panels. There are string courses between the floors and a cill course at the second floor. The building has a low parapet and two tall, corniced wall-head stacks that are symmetrically placed, along with additional end stacks on the twin gables, and a slated roof.

To the south, a three-storey piended wing extends four bays, along with an additional modern bay, forming a T-plan. The interior is described as simple.
