Description

This is a late 19th-century commercial building of four storeys and an attic, situated at 26-36 Whitehall Street, Dundee. It has five bays and features shopfronts on the ground floor. The building is constructed of cream sandstone ashlar, with the ground floor painted. It has a grey slate Mansard roof.

The ground floor has modillioned cornicing and an open-work parapet above. A lintel band runs along the first floor, and a cill band along the second. The main cornice over the second floor is corniced and modillioned, with a fluted and dentilled lintel band. A corniced wallhead course leads to a balustraded parapet. The windows are single and canted, with architraves. Pilasters are present on the first floor, with alternating segmental and triangular pediments above the windows. The second floor features colonette nook shafts and pilasters. The third floor has shouldered and mannered volutes. All windows have two-pane timber sash and case glazing. A pilaster marks the angle at the right-hand side, where an urn finial is missing. The ridge stacks are corbelled, corniced, and have mostly uniform cream cans.

The front elevation has an altered ground floor. The centre of the first to third floors has three single windows, flanked by canted windows in the outer bays. Five dormers are present in the attic, alternating between bipartite and round-headed designs.

The interior has not been inspected.

The building’s address is officially recorded as 26-36 (even numbers) Whitehall Street. Its design relates to that of 7 and 9 Whitehall Crescent, as noted in related records.
