Description
Dated 1891, Kimberley Buildings is a four-story and attic commercial building of three bays located on a corner site where Whitehall Street meets Whitehall Crescent in Dundee. The building is constructed of cream sandstone ashlar, with the ground floor painted. It has a slate Mansard roof. The ground floor is modillioned and corniced, with an open-work parapet above. A lintel band runs along the first floor and a cill band along the second. There is a consoled and modillioned main cornice over the second floor, a fluted and dentilled lintel band, a corniced wallhead course, and a balustraded parapet. The corner bay features single, canted, four-light windows architraved and pilastered to the first floor, with alternate segmental and triangular pediments. The second floor has colonette nook shafts and pilasters, while the third floor features shouldered pilasters with mannered volutes. The attic tower is round-headed. The windows are timber sash and case with two panes of glass. Corbelled and corniced ridge stacks are topped with uniform cream cans.
The front elevation has a panelled door at the centre, flanked by a more modern shopfront to the left and an original shopfront to the right, extending into the corner bay. This corner shopfront features cast-iron columns and banded pilasters. Single windows are found on the first, second, and third floors at the centre, with a canted window to the left and a corner bay window to the right, extending to the attic. A pedimented date panel sits above the corner bay window (the dome roof is missing), and there are a bipartite and round-headed dormer to the left. The interior of the building has not been inspected. The statutory address is 38 and 40 Whitehall Street, Kimberley Buildings.
