Description

Dated 1885, 20 Whitehall Street is a 4-storey and attic commercial building with shopfronts on the ground floor. Constructed in cream sandstone ashlar with a grey slate Mansard roof, the building has a modillioned and corniced ground floor, an open-work parapet above, and a lintel band to the first floor. A consoled balcony extends across the three central bays of the second floor, featuring a decorative cast-iron parapet. A cill band is present on the second floor and a consoled and modillioned main cornice tops the second floor, complemented by a fluted and dentilled lintel band and a corniced wallhead course with a balustraded parapet. The windows are single and canted, with architraves, pilasters on the first floor, colonette nook shafts and pilasters on the second floor, and shouldered volutes on the third floor. They have 2-pane timber sash and case glazing. A pilaster with a swagged urn finial is found at the right-hand angle. Corbelled and corniced ridge stacks are also present.

The front elevation features a mask-keystoned round-headed doorway in the center, containing a two-leaf panelled door and a pilastered doorpiece with an open pediment and a cartouche date panel set within the tympanum. The shopfronts on either side have been altered. The first three floors have single windows in the center, flanked by canted windows in the outer bays. Three round-headed dormers, with bipartite windows on the left and right, are visible in the attic.

The interior remains unseen. The statutory address also includes 14-24 (even numbers) Whitehall Street and the building has connections with 7 and 9 Whitehall Street, as detailed in associated references and notes.
