Description
This is a late 19th-century commercial building situated on a corner site, with shopfronts fronting both Whitehall Street and Nethergate. The building is four storeys high, with an additional attic level and an octagonal turret at the corner. The turret is topped with a finialled, facetted dome. It is constructed of cream sandstone ashlar with a grey slate Mansard roof and fishscale slates on the dome. Architectural details include a modillioned cornice to the ground floor, an open-work parapet above, lintel and cill bands on the first and second floors, a consoled and modillioned main cornice above the second floor with a fluted and dentilled lintel band, a cill band to the third floor, a corniced wallhead course with a balustraded parapet, and pilasters to the corners featuring swagged urn finials. The windows are architraved, single, bi-, and tripartite, with a canted window and a five-light window to the corner. The first floor windows have pilasters with triangular and segmental pediments; the second floor windows have nook shafts and pilasters; the third floor windows are shouldered with mannered volutes; and the fourth floor angle windows are keystoned and pilastered. The windows are fitted with two-pane timber sash and case glazing. There are corniced ridge stacks with mostly uniform cream cans.
The Whitehall Street elevation includes a modern shopfront from 1993, a close door to the right, a single window, a tripartite window to the right, and angle windows at the first to third floors. The turret is located on the left side of the fourth floor, featuring a segmental and bipartite dormer to the right.
The Nethergate elevation has modern shopfronts at ground floor level. The upper floor windows consist of bipartite, canted, single, and another bipartite window from left to right. Dormers include two keystoned and round-headed examples, and three bipartite box dormers.
The interior has not been inspected.
The statutory address of the building is 2 and 4 Whitehall Street and 4 and 6 Nethergate.
