Whitehall Chambers, 9, 11, 13 Whitehall Street, Dundee

Whitehall Chambers is an 1887 commercial building of four storeys and an attic, located at 9, 11, and 13 Whitehall Street, Dundee. The building is constructed of cream sandstone ashlar with a grey slate Mansard roof. The ground floor features shopfronts, and the front elevation is characterised by a pilastered doorpiece at the centre, topped with a keystoned round-headed arch. An unusual finial, depicting an inkwell with a pen resting on a pile of books, sits above the arch. Single and canted architraved windows are present, with varying decorative details across the floors: triangular and segmental pediments to the first floor, colonette nook shafts and pilasters to the second floor, and shouldered volutes to the third floor. These windows have two-pane timber sash and case glazing. A modillioned cornice runs along the ground floor, with open-work parapet above, and a lintel band is present on the first floor. A cill band marks the second floor, and a consoled and modillioned main cornice sits above the second floor, accompanied by a fluted and dentilled cill band, and a corniced wallhead cornice with a balustraded parapet. A pilaster defines the angle on the left side of the building. The roof features corniced ridge stacks. The front elevation includes three single windows flanked by canted windows on the upper floors and three keystoned, round-headed dormers flanked by smaller, bipartite box dormers. The interior has not been inspected.
