Description
Dated 1891, Kimberley Buildings is a four-storey and attic, three-bay commercial building situated on a corner site with Whitehall Crescent. It is constructed of cream sandstone ashlar, with the ground floor painted. The building is topped by a slate Mansard roof. The ground floor features modillions and cornices, along with an open-work parapet. A lintel band runs above the first floor, and a cill band marks the second. A richly ornamented main cornice, incorporating modillions and a fluted and dentilled lintel band, sits above the second floor, leading to a corniced wallhead course and a balustraded parapet. A single, canted, four-light bay window is arched and architraved, featuring pilasters on the first floor with alternating segmental and triangular pediments. The second floor has colonette nook shafts and pilasters, while the third floor is shouldered with mannered volutes to the pilasters of the angle bay. The attic tower has a round-headed form. The windows are timber sash and case, with two panes to each. The building has corbelled and corniced ridge stacks with uniform cream cans.
The front elevation features a panelled door in the centre, accompanied by a pilastered doorpiece. A modern shopfront is to the left, while an original shopfront extends to the angle bay on the right, incorporating cast-iron columns and banded pilasters. Single windows are present on the first through third floors in the centre, with a canted window to the left and an angle bay window on the right, extending to the attic. The angle bay window incorporates a pedimented date panel (although the dome roof is missing) and a bipartite and round-headed dormer to the left. The interior has not been inspected. Statutory address is 38, 40 Whitehall Street.
