Description

The Pavilion in Baxter Park, Dundee, was designed by G H Stokes between 1859 and 1863, with a layout by Sir Joseph Paxton. This Italian Renaissance pavilion features a five-bay open loggia supported by clusters of four Roman Doric columns, with keyblocked arches that are consoled. The loggia extends into square corner pavilions, which are adorned with coupled Ionic pilasters at the angles and plain blind arches on the east and west fronts, although the glazing is now boarded over.

The pavilion has balustraded parapets, and the end pavilions rise higher, topped with conical finials on sculptured plinths. The back wall is arcaded, with lower outshots at re-entrant angles and a central niche in the loggia.

Steps align with the central axis, with dies that bear cast-iron urns at both the top and bottom, although the balustrade is missing. The boundary walls to the park are low and coped, with missing railings except at Wortley Place. Square ashlar gatepiers are present on Arbroath Road, along with a cast iron over-arch, but the gates are missing.
