Description

Park U.P. Church, located at 18 Park Avenue in Dundee, was designed by Leslie Ower and built between 1898 and 1899. This spired church sits on a tight corner site and features an unusual plan with Gothic-inspired details, constructed from snecked rubble.

The church has a square section unbuttressed tower positioned at a canted angle. The entrance is chamfered and pointed-arched, topped with a Gothic fanlight and a pointed dripmould. Above the entrance, there are square-headed single and bipartite lights, and the tower culminates in a louvred crenellated belfry stage topped with a facetted needle spire and a wrought-iron finial.

On the elevation facing Park Avenue, there is a large two-bay gable that is buttressed and finialled. The ground floor features large four-light windows with slim mullions, while the upper section has pointed Y-traceried windows. At the apex, there are twin louvred lancets, and a small curved corbelled bay with a fish-scale slate roof fills the re-entrant space with the tower.

The elevation facing Morgan Street is similar but narrower, taller, and has a steeper gable. It includes a bowed stair turret with a fish-scale slate roof.

The hall on Park Avenue is two stories tall and features basket-arched bipartite windows, along with a lower porch. There is a low boundary wall to Park Avenue with modern railings.

The church is topped with steep slate roofs that have ridge tiles, and it features leaded glass windows. The hall has lying-pane sash and case windows. Inside, the church has a galleried interior with a collar-beam roof and carved false hammer beams.
