Description

Leslie Ower, 1898-9. Spired church on tight corner site

with unusual plan using Gothic-derived details. Snecked

rubble.

Square section unbuttressed tower on canted angle.

Chamfered pointed-arched entrance with Gothic fanlight

under pointed dripmould. Square-headed single and

bipartite lights over. Louvred crenellated belfry stage.

Facetted needle spire with wrought-iron finial.

ELEVATION TO PARK AVENUE: large 2-bay gable, buttressed

and finialled. Large 4-light windows with slim mullions at

ground floor. Pointed Y-traceried windows over. Twin

louvred lancets at apex. Small curved corbelled bay with

fish-scale slate roof fills re-entrant with tower.

ELEVATION TO MORGAN STREET: similar but narrower, taller

and steeper gable. Bowed stair turret with fishscale

slate roof.

HALL, PARK AVENUE: 2-storey, basket-arched bipartites.

Lower porch. Low boundary wall to Park Avenue, modern

railings.

Steep slate roofs with ridge tiles. Leaded glass windows

to church, lying-pane sash and case windows to hall.

Galleried interior, collar-beam roof with carved false

hammer beams.
