Description

The Former Hall of St John's Episcopal Church, located at 110 Albert Street in Dundee, was designed by Rev Edward Sugden in 1885. This small Gothic church features a nave, an apsidal chancel, aisles, and an attached hall. It is constructed from rubble with ashlar dressings and is positioned at a picturesque 45-degree angle to the street.

The exterior includes a canted porch with a pointed arched entrance that leads to a shouldered arched door inscribed with text. The aisles have three trefoiled triple lights, and the timber clerestory features mullioned triple lights. The chancel has a three-sided apse with a side bay that is splayed to the pavement line, and it contains cusped single and two-light windows. The northeast gable, which is the liturgical west, has two square-headed windows that were originally two-light but were altered for stained glass in 1904, along with an oculus. The gable is angle chamfered and corbelled out on the left side, with a stack on the right. A square-section bellcote with louvres and cusps sits atop a steep French slate roof, which is finished with a wrought-iron cross finial. The slate roof features ridge tiles over the chancel, a Celtic cross finial on the chancel arch, and a wrought-iron finial on the apse. Most windows have small pane cathedral glazing, except for the apse and northeast gable, which contain stained glass.

The hall has a three-bay gable facing the street, with a central door flanked by two top-hopper windows and an upper small-paned traceried window, all featuring hoodmoulds. The rear is constructed from brick, and the hall has a slate roof with a skylight and a wrought-iron finial.

Inside the church, there is a four-bay nave and aisles supported by a timber hammer beam roof on a timber arcade. The windows are hoodmoulded and feature stained glass in the chancel and at the rear, the latter dated 1904. The interior was refurnished by Thoms and Wilkie, showcasing high-quality woodwork by Jones and Willis. Notable features include an ornate carved counterbalanced font cover, a pulpit, and choir stalls with mythological beasts as armrests. The church also houses a Perpendicular Gothic organ case, carved reredoes with a triptych, an ashlar chancel arch, a marble chancel floor and rail, and a brass altar rail, along with wrought-iron light fittings.
