Description
The Temple of Pomona is a pavilion built around 1747-48, with an extension added in the early to mid-19th century. It was constructed by Simon File, likely following designs by Joseph Sanderson. The front is made of ashlar stone with chamfered quoins and features slate roofs. This structure serves as a Palladian garden feature with three bays; the outer bays are lower and have lean-tos that create an implied pediment above the taller central bay, which has a pedimented break. The central section includes a round-headed moulded arch that springs from moulded imposts and features a fluted bracketed key. This arch is flanked by Doric columns that support a pediment. On either side of the arch, there are round-headed glazing bar sash windows with moulded architraves, raised keys, and bracketed sills.
The rear extension is built of brick with ashlar quoins and dressings, topped with a slate roof that has rustic barge boards. On the north elevation, there is a gabled two-storey bay to the left and a single-storey bay to the right with a flat roof. This section features glazing bar casements with shaped lintels, and the left-hand gable displays intertwined initials H.C.O.
