Description

The stables at Mossknowe House were largely built in the second half of the 18th century, with work possibly overseen by William Craik of Arbigland around 1770, although some elements may be earlier. A south block was added in the 19th century. The stables form a large courtyard with several ranges arranged around it. The northern side is bounded by low quadrant walls with square, rusticated piers. The buildings are constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings and have slate roofs.

The west range is a barn featuring a wide doorway with a timber lintel and slit ventilators. A lean-to addition at the rear (west) has a large, sculpted crest in the south wall. The south and east ranges include square loft openings and are connected by a shelter at their shared angle. The south range comprises six bays, with a cantilevered forestair leading to one of three partially blocked segmental-arched cartsheds. A south-facing cartshed is located at the southeast corner, featuring a reset yellow cove stone lintel dated 1671, three arcaded openings at ground level, and four square loft openings. Simpler, detached ranges are situated to the south and east.
