Description
This is an 18th and 19th century T-plan parish church. It is located in Kirkpatrick Fleming and is still in use as an ecclesiastical building. The church's construction likely began around 1733, with the east and west gables and the north wall of the main body being the earliest elements. Around 1778, the church was “partly rebuilt,” which likely involved raising the walls by several courses and rebuilding the long south wall. This reconstruction resulted in a deeper plan for the church and introduced windows with voussoired keystones, aprons, and a narrow base course. The north jamb may be contemporary with this work, although its openings were originally square-headed. Further renovations occurred in 1892, introducing a north porch, a roof with red ridging tiles, and a birdcage belfry above the north jamb.
The church is constructed of red rubble with ashlar dressings and margins. The roof is covered with graded slates and red ridging tiles, featuring finials over the east and west gables. Two burial enclosures are located to the west, including the separately listed fine Renaissance Mossknowe enclosure.
The interior, largely dating from circa 1835, is believed to be the work of William MacGowan. It features three galleries with panelled fronts supported by two slender cast-iron columns, and an octagonal pulpit centrally located on the south wall, with a round-arched backboard.
The churchyard contains a rusticated enclosure built around 1796 by Irving of Woodhouse, made of red ashlar with white marble inscription panels. A plain red ashlar enclosure is situated at the southwest end of the churchyard. The churchyard is enclosed by ashlar-coped rubble walls, with gates at the north and west, supported by square gate piers. The churchyard is populated mainly by 18th and 19th century headstones.
