Description
Notwen House, built in 1851, is a substantial building originally designed as a poorhouse by John Hodgson of Carlisle. It is located in Kirkpatrick-Fleming. The building has a T-shaped plan, with a long, symmetrical front elevation facing south, comprising eleven bays. It has two storeys and a basement to the rear. A twin-gabled rear wing extends to the north, incorporating four bays. In 1907, the building was altered by Oliver Dodgshon of Carlisle.
The exterior is constructed from stugged red sandstone with projecting cills. A prominent, corniced and painted doorpiece is centrally positioned on the south front, featuring a recessed door and a fanlight, with a rectangular panel above. The windows are sash windows with a 12-pane glazing pattern. Some smaller windows in the third and ninth bays of the south elevation are not original. The eaves are blocked, and end and axial stacks rise from the roof. The building is topped with slate roofing.
An enclosure wall to the south includes a gateway with square piers and wrought-iron gates. The male residents' rooms and associated yards are located on the west side of the building, while the female residents' rooms and yards are located on the east side. Original drawings from October 1851 and May 1907 are held within the Scottish Record Office.
