Description
This is an earlier/mid 19th century picturesque farmhouse situated on the west bank of the Ewes Water, facing the main road, and at the northeast corner of a courtyard. It forms part of the Buccleuch Estates sawmill complex and was the residence of R B Burnet, the estate’s architect (died circa 1920). The main house is a two-storey building constructed of rubble with contrasting grey ashlar dressings, and roofs covered with graded slates.
The house’s elevations are twin-gabled, except at the west. It has single windows throughout with a 12-pane glazing pattern. An inner porch, with bargeboards featuring a cusped pattern, is located at the east; it has a shouldered doorway and a recessed third bay to the left. There are projecting eaves and two corniced central stacks.
To the west of the house is a low, single-storey range, containing a workshop and store to the south, and a cottage to the rear (west). The western range has alterations to the courtyard. Its main elevation faces east with sash windows and a 12-pane glazing pattern, featuring a segmental-arched, blocked pend in the gabled, central bay, and a slightly taller, three-bay southern block. The southern block’s gable has a twin-gabled south elevation. The northern range, incorporating the cottage, returns south at the east end and extends with a northern wing. A free-standing block to the southwest originally comprised a symmetrical, three-bay stable with a two-bay cart-shed, incorporating a loft below the eaves.
