Description
This is an earlier or mid-19th century picturesque house situated on the west bank of the Ewes Water, opposite the main road, and forming part of a courtyard. It stands alongside a workshop/store, a cottage, and other associated ranges, all as part of the former Buccleuch Estates sawmill complex. The house is rubble-built with contrasting grey ashlar dressings, and all roofs are covered with graded slates.
The house itself is two storeys high and has a twin-gabled facade except for the west elevation. The windows are single throughout, featuring a 12-pane glazing pattern. A barge-boarded porch is located on the east side, incorporating a shouldered doorway and a recessed third bay to the left of the doorway. Projecting eaves and cusped barge-boards are present, as are two corniced central stacks.
The associated west range of buildings has undergone alterations and features a main elevation to the east with sash windows and a 12-pane glazing pattern. A segmental-arched, blocked pend is visible in the gabled central bay, and a taller three-bay southern block has a twin-gabled south elevation. The north range incorporates a cottage returning southwards at the east end, with a projecting north wing. A free-standing block to the southwest originally comprised a symmetrical, three-bay stable with a two-bay cart-shed, and includes a loft contained below the eaves.
The property was the residence of R B Burnet, the architect for the Buccleuch estate, who died around 1920.
