Description
This is an earlier or mid 19th century picturesque house situated on the west bank of the Ewes Water, facing the main road, and at the northeast corner of a courtyard. It is part of the former Buccleuch Estates sawmill complex and was the residence of R B Burnet, the estate’s architect (died circa 1920). It is accompanied by associated ranges, a cottage, and workshops/stores.
The main house is two storeys high with bargeboard detailing. It is constructed of rubble with contrasting grey ashlar dressings, and has roofs covered in graded slates. The elevations are twin-gabled, except at the west, featuring single windows throughout with a 12-pane glazing pattern. An inner porch with a shouldered doorway is located on the east, with a recessed third bay to the left of the doorway. Projecting eaves, bargeboards with a cusped pattern, and two corniced central stacks are also present.
The west range, which features alterations to the courtyard, has a main east elevation with sash windows and 12-pane glazing. It includes a segmental-arched blocked pend within the gabled central bay and within a slightly taller three-bay block at the south end. This southern block has a twin-gabled south elevation. The north range, containing a cottage, returns south at the east end and has a north wing. A free-standing block to the southwest, formerly a stable with a loft contained below the eaves, is symmetrical with three bays and a two-bay cart-shed.
