Description

This is an earlier or mid-19th century picturesque house and associated workshops and cottage, situated on the western bank of the Ewes Water, facing the road, and forming part of a courtyard. The buildings are constructed of rubble stone with grey ashlar dressings, and feature roofs covered in graded slates. The main house is a two-storey structure with twin gables on its elevations, except at the west. It has single windows throughout, with a 12-pane glazing pattern. A bargeboarded porch is located at the east, incorporating a shouldered doorway and a recessed third bay to the left. Projecting eaves and cusped bargeboards are present, along with two corniced central stacks.

To the west of the house is a low, single-storey range which includes workshops and stores. This range has been altered in the courtyard and features a main elevation to the east with sash windows and 12-pane glazing. A segmental-arched, blocked pend is present in the central, gabled bay, and a taller, three-bay block at the southern end has a twin-gabled southern elevation. A cottage extends to the north, returning south at the eastern end and incorporating a northern wing. A free-standing block to the southwest consists of a symmetrical, three-bay former stable with a two-bay cart-shed. A loft is contained below the eaves.

The buildings were part of the Buccleuch Estates sawmill complex and served as the residence of R B Burnet, the architect for the Buccleuch estate (died circa 1920).
