Description

Ewesbank Cottage is an earlier or mid-19th century picturesque, two-storey house situated on the western bank of the Ewes Water, facing the main road, and at the northeast corner of a courtyard. It is part of a complex associated with the Buccleuch Estates sawmill. A low, single-storey range (workshop/store) runs south, while the cottage is set back in a lower western range. The house is constructed of rubble with contrasting grey ashlar dressings, and has roofs covered with graded slates.

The house's elevations feature twin gables, except for the west side. Single windows are present throughout, featuring a 12-pane glazing pattern. An inner porch with a shouldered doorway is located at the east side, with a recessed third bay to the left of the doorway. There are projecting eaves and bargeboards with a cusped pattern, along with two corniced central stacks.

Associated ranges include a western range with alterations in the courtyard, a main elevation to the east with sash windows and 12-pane glazing, a segmental-arched, blocked pend in the gabled central bay, and a taller three-bay block at the south end, with a twin-gabled south elevation. A northern range, containing a cottage, returns south at the eastern end and has a north wing. A free-standing block to the southwest is a symmetrical, three-bay former stable with a two-bay cart-shed, and contains a loft below the eaves.

The property was the residence of R.B. Burnet, the architect for the Buccleuch estate, who died around 1920. The statutory address is Ewesbank House and adjoining cottage, workshops/stores.
