Description

This is an Episcopal church, opened in September 1883. It was built to serve both the Duke of Buccleuch’s household and the local episcopal community. The church is a gabled, rectangular building with a 4-bay plan. It is constructed primarily of vertical timber boards, set upon a red ashlar base, with timber margins. The western gable features a centrally positioned porch, and a low chancel extends to the east, with a vestry adjoining it to the south. The porch and vestry each have shouldered doors. The windows are square-headed, with transomed bipartites and pointed lights, and are mostly plain leaded. A 3-light window is present in the chancel, and a small quartrefoil light sits above the porch. A central axial ventilator is fitted and the building is roofed with slate. A bronze bell, dated 1883 and made by Mears and Stainbank of London, is raised on a timber frame at the north end of the western gable. The building is thought to be based on a standard design, similar to the now-demolished St Bride’s Church in Glasgow. It remains in ecclesiastical use.
