Description
Ewesbank Farmhouse is an earlier to mid-19th century house situated on the west bank of the Ewes Water, facing the road, and at the northeast corner of a courtyard. It forms part of a complex that includes workshops, stores, a cottage, and other associated ranges, all originally part of the Buccleuch Estates sawmill complex. The house is notable as the residence of R B Burnet, the architect for the Buccleuch estate who died around 1920.
The main house is a two-storey structure with a picturesque bargeboard design. It is built of rubble with contrasting grey ashlar dressings, and has roofs covered with graded slates. The elevations are twin-gabled, except at the west. Single windows, all with a 12-pane glazing pattern, are present throughout. There is a bargeboarded inner porch on the east side with a shouldered doorway and a recessed third bay to the left. Projecting eaves and cusped bargeboards are present, along with two corniced central stacks.
The west range has undergone alterations to the courtyard. Its main elevation faces east and features sash windows, again with a 12-pane glazing pattern. A segmental-arched, blocked pend is visible in the gabled central bay, and a taller, three-bay block at the south end has a twin-gabled south elevation. The north range, which incorporates the cottage, returns south at the east end and includes a north wing. A free-standing block to the southwest, originally a symmetrical three-bay stable with a two-bay cart-shed, has a loft contained below the eaves.
