Description
This is an earlier or mid-19th century picturesque house, located on the west bank of the Ewes Water, facing the road, and at the northeastern corner of a courtyard. It forms part of the Buccleuch Estates sawmill complex and was the residence of R B Burnet, the estate’s architect (died circa 1920). The property includes a cottage in a lower rear (west) range, a long, low single-story workshop/store to the south, and a free-standing former stable with a two-bay cart-shed to the southwest.
The house is built of rubble with contrasting grey ashlar dressings, and all roofs are covered with graded slates. The elevations are twin-gabled except at the west end and feature single windows throughout with a 12-pane glazing pattern. There is a barge-boarded inner porch at the east end, with a shouldered doorway and a recessed third bay to the left. Projecting eaves, barge-boards with a cusped pattern, and two corniced central stacks are also present.
The western range has alterations to the courtyard. The main elevation faces east and features sash windows with 12-pane glazing. A segmental-arched blocked pend is located in the gabled central bay, and a taller three-bay block at the south end has a twin-gabled south elevation. The northern range (cottage) returns south at the east end and includes a north wing. The free-standing block to the southwest is a symmetrical three-bay former stable with a loft contained below the eaves.
